Decoding the best from the India Couture Week 2019

India Couture Week has evolved as a platform for new age designers, with room for menswear, western silhouettes and a functional spin to luxury. A week before the six-day India Couture Week (ICW) 2019 opened in New Delhi on Monday, the apex organising body, Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), released a formal note announcing the lineup. It stated how this edition would see 10 fashion designers reinterpret modern luxury, changing the tone by “adding functionality to decadence”. 1. Suneet Varma: Drawing inspiration from light within, the designer curated his latest collection titled “Amara”, showcased on the second day of the FDCI India Couture Week 2019. Varma presented 52 pieces, including lehengas, sarees as well as contemporary wears with bead work, Swarovski crystals, mirror work and intricate hand embroidery. He has used Indian silhouettes, traditional motifs and applique on a wide range of fabrics like satin, silk, net and georgette. Ivory, beige and icy pink dominated the ensemble. Dark shades of midnight blue and burgundy with silver accents were used. Ditching too much of red or dark navy blue which the designer has used in the past, there were hues of green, light blue and gold.

2. Rahul Mishra: Ace designer Rahul Mishra enthralled everyone with his annual couture collection on the third day of the FDCI India Couture Week (ICW) 2019 on Wednesday. The ensemble was inspired by his recent trip to Monaco and his childhood memories of a village in Uttar Pradesh. The set for the show was created to look like the streets of Monaco, surrounded by European facades and lush foliage that continued into the garments that the models walk in. He has used Indian silhouettes with a dense play of florals motifs weaved with intricate multi-colour hand embroideries, three-dimensional hand embroideries and appliques. There were lehengas, anarkalis with jackets, sarees with dupattas and gowns, and kurta-churidaar with intricate hand embroidered nehru jackets, rendered in silk organzas, silk crepe and muga silk with shimmering, glossy texture. The entire collection was set on ivory and pastels colours that took over to gold, yellow, navy and peaches. The designer also showcased quintessential red bridal lehenga with zardozi work.

3. Amit Aggarwal’s ‘Lumen’ gives a glimpse of the future of Indian couture and fashion. A part from his farsighted vision, his collection has come to life due to his collaborations with Taani by Tanira Sethi and jewelry association with Narayan Jewels by Ketan and Jatin Choksi. At India Couture Week 2019 Lumen was seen playing with hues of gold, silver, ivory accompanied with opaque and metallic colours and a jewel pallet of plum, purple and emerald. The indo-western outfits for both men and women seemed like a tribute to the environment creating a statement of what sustainable fashion can bring to the ramp. His obsession towards geometrical patterns, the surreal and fluidity can be witnessed in his collection that constitutes of recycled polymer strips to integrate patterns of animal and plant anatomy  on his outfits.
